A Weekly Guide to Eco-Friendly Living, 20 Sustainable Things to Do in May

A Weekly Guide to Eco-Friendly Living, 20 Sustainable Things to Do in May

May is here and what better time to commit to caring for the planet? As a leader in sustainable luxury fashion, we at Amanzzo invite you to join us in committing to 20 small actions with a big impact over the next month.

Each week has its own focus, from eco-practices in the home, sustainable diet choices, water conservation and recycling right through to personal care and fashion. Read on for your weekly guide to making choices that benefit both the planet and those we share it with.

First up, we’re focusing on energy efficiency and waste reduction.

Week 1:

  1. Defrost Your Fridge/Freezer - Keeping your appliances ice-free improves their efficiency and longevity.
  2. Choose High Energy Rating Appliances - Are you thinking of buying a new appliance, but you’re not quite ready yet? Do some research on your next household purchase to ensure it’s as eco-friendly as possible. By choosing appliances that use less energy, you can significantly decrease your household energy consumption leading to greater overall efficiency.
  3. Meal plan for the next five days - Buying only the exact ingredients and quantities that you need helps reduce overconsumption and in the long-term minimise waste.
  4. Smart Usage - Save water, detergent and energy by only running your dishwasher when it’s full.

Week 2: Sustainable Diet Choices

Our impact on the planet includes how and what we choose to eat as much as overconsuming clothing, travelling excessively and using unnecessary energy. So, this week we’re focusing on weaving sustainability into our diet.

  1. Reduce Consumption of Animal Products - Even a small reduction, like reducing meat just one day per week or skipping cheese in just one meal can decrease your carbon footprint significantly.
  2. Buy Local, Organic Produce - Buying less, but buying better quality from local, organic traders supports sustainable agriculture by minimising pesticide use, protecting soil health, and reducing transportation emissions.
  3. Visit Local Farmer’s Markets - Purchasing seasonal produce helps reduce food miles. Long-term, this reduces environmental impact from farm to plate.
  4. Skip The Takeaway - Eating in or using reusable containers for homemade leftovers can help cut down on single-use plastic and minimise hard-to-recycle styrofoam waste.

Week 3: Eco-Friendly Household Practices

  1. Try Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products - Try eco-friendly household cleaning brands like Ecoleaf, Method and more. Or, you could try making your own household cleaning products using readily available products like white vinegar and bicarbonate of soda.
  2. Invest in a Waste Separator Bin - Simplify your recycling process at home with a bin that divides recyclables from waste, encouraging more consistent recycling habits.
  3. Opt for Sustainable Cleaning Tools - Replace synthetic sponges with those made from loofah or coconut to reduce microplastic runoff. Like these from EcoVibe.
  4. Recycle Around The House - Often, when thinking about recycling, we focus on the kitchen. Look for opportunities to recycle around the house, especially in the bathroom.

Week 4: Water Conservation and Recycling

  1. Filter Your Water - Reduce bottled water use with a filter jug that you can fill up and take with you on the go, saving money and reducing plastic waste.
  2. Ditch Plastic Straws - Choose reusable or biodegradable alternatives. We love stainless steel ones like these from Amazon.
  3. Take Shorter Showers and Save The Planet - By showering for just 1 minute less each day, collectively we’d save lots of water and the energy required to heat it too.

Week 5: Personal Care and Fashion

  1. Choose Sustainable Underwear - Opt for pieces made from organic or recycled materials.
  2. Wash Clothes in Cold Water - This simple change saves energy and extends the life of your clothes - winner!
  3. Use a Microfiber Catching Wash Bag - Protect the oceans by catching microfibers from your clothes. Shop here.
  4. Switch to Eco-Friendly Bathroom Products - From shampoo bars to bamboo toothbrushes, every little bit helps.

By embracing these small, everyday changes, we can collaboratively make a big impact for ourselves, wildlife and our planet.
